The Fine Art of Rug Making
Services We Offer:
Stair/Hallway Runners:
Stair and hallway runners are a passion of mine! Finding the right type of carpet, the right binding material, and the right type of installation is what makes stair runners so desirable. Many steps have turns, landings and other distinct changes that make a stair runner pop even more. Add to that a hallway and you’ve really added some attitude to your space!
Area Rugs:
An area rug can do many things for a space. It can brighten it up, tone it down, compliment other features in the room, and let’s not forget the feel of a beautiful rug underfoot! Rugs can range from polyester and nylon, all the way to wool, and natural fibers like sisal or sea grass. The right binding can make all the difference for the look of the rug as well. Rugs can be square, rectangular, circle, oval, or cut to fit to suit your space.
Custom Hand Carved Rugs:
In 2021 I purchased “Carpets By Design” from Jan Berglowe. I knew what a carved rug was, but I did not know the process of how to make one. Jan took me in and taught me the process, and it has also become a passion. It literally set my career on a new path! The process is amazing, and what I have found is that the only limits to creating a custom rug is creativity! These rugs can be used for many things. Stair & hallway runners, room size rugs, even company logo rugs can be made. I’ve even made a couple of pieces that can be considered art! The process is a lot of fun, and the client is involved throughout the process.
Binding:
There are a lot of ways to bind a rug! Here is a list of some different edge treatments.
Polyester Binding: Standard 1-1/4” binding. This is inexpensive and durable. Polyester is slightly transparent, so it tends to blend in well when it’s applied
Cloth Tape: Standard 1-1/4” cloth tape is a little bit more durable than polyester. It is opaque, so the color will be more defined when it’s sewn on.
Serge: Serge gives a more stylish look to the edge, and it is also opaque. The material does cost more, so the price per foot will show that difference. Most of my clients who are looking for an upgrade like this option.
Wide Tape: Wide tape comes in a variety of widths. The most common widths are 3” & 5”. The tape is sewn onto the face of the rug, then folded over the thread, so the stitch becomes hidden. The nice thing about wide tape is that the amount that is shown on the face can be regulated. Wide tape comes in a variety of material, including cloth, canvas, linen, polyester, faux leather, and several more. I’ve even used curtain material to sew as a binding to tie a rug together with the curtains! Canvas is a more commonly used material because of its durability. Linen is also quite durable and is a great product to work with.
Accessories:
If you would like to pump your runner project a notch, then accessorizing is for you! Two of the biggest accessories are studs and stair rods. Both of these add a pop to the finished project. Studs come in dozens of sizes and shapes and can be placed as close or far apart as you would like. Stair rods come in several varieties, with brass being the most common. The real accent comes with the finial that goes on either side. They range in all shapes and sizes.
Custom Walk-Off Mats:
Custom walk off mats are a great addition to any space! I can work with you to coordinate the colors from your room into it. I also try to keep some rugs in stock as well. Or make a design that is completely your own. Would you like to incorporate your favorite sports teams colors or emblems into it? I can do that as well. Thes rugs are made of top-quality carpet and will have a bound edge securely applied. Also, all mats will have a non-skid pad applied to them, when makes it easy on the feet, and assures that it won’t slide around.
Remnants:
Sometimes, when a project is completed, for one of many reasons, there will be a sizeable amount of carpet left over. The carpet is just too beautiful to be discarded, so I keep it on a rack in my workshop. These rugs are perfect for small area rugs, steps, stair or hallway runners. I can sell these goods at a much lower rate than if they had to be ordered, so you, the client, can get a great deal, and have a beautiful rug or runner placed in your home!
Designers can also contact me to see if I have a color or pattern that goes with your project. I have many woven and flat weaves to choose from.
Repairs & Resizing:
I have been called in to do many types of repairs on rugs. Everything from repairing pulls to repairing damaged serging to altering the tassels on a runner. I have also had clients who would like to have their rugs resized or have new binding sewn on their rug.
It’s more than just a tagline. For me, it is a mindset. Like an artist who pours their talent into each work, I do the same with the work that I do. If you put love into your work, it is sure to show, and that is the commitment I bring to each project I do. Even after several decades in this trade, I am still constantly learning, always reaching to learn the next new thing. For me, it is exciting. I GET to do this! I’ve heard it said that if you truly love what you do, you will never work a day in your life. Sometimes this work can be physically demanding, but it is ALWAYS satisfying. Taking a project, your project, and bringing a vision into the world is a great honor for me.
